| Living in the Shadow of the Dome |
| From: potomacfever1 |
My hometown is Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. I know what you’re thinking, “That’s not a hometown.” But for me, it is. My actual hometown is a small town in Upstate N.Y. But as an 8th grader on a 2-day field trip, I came to Washington in 1976. I caught Potomac Fever big time, moved here after college, and have enjoyed the community for more than 20 years.
Despite that it’s nestled in a big city, Capitol Hill has a “village feel,” especially the area where I live, South East. I love going to Eastern Market, a working vendor market that still has an early 20th century feel. I know most vendors by name, which adds to the neighborhood feel. Maria at the vegetable market always gives me extra fruit when I come by, I get free refills on coffee at the pastry counter, and adore the breakfasts during the week at the Market Breakfast. Walking down Pennsylvania Avenue usually means encountering a friend or colleague, always wonderful on the weekend. And anchoring it all is the most beautiful building in the world, the U.S. Capitol. I’ve been here two decades and I never miss an opportunity to steal a glance, marveling at both its physical presence and its virtual presence. Living in the shadow of the dome means something, and makes me feel kind of lucky. |
