| Presume it's the View |
| From: travelinlkrauss |
Fourth date with Dov: Pizza in Haifa's Carmel Center district, a leafy neighborhood in the mountaintop city with a View to downtown and the Haifa Bay.
In Israel, people are always talking about the View. "You should see Austria," they enthuse. "What a view! So green." And though at home our surroundings are more familiar, to the Israeli, there are still Views to be appreciated. Especially in Haifa, where they are an integral part of the city.
Who knows what we found to talk about at the restaurant – conversation didn't come easily those first few dates. We didn't quite click, and I felt like I somehow wasn't letting him see the real me.
The after-dinner stroll: We ended up on Yafeh Nof St. – "A Beautiful View" in Hebrew. We leaned side by side on a wall, looking down at the city, from the green-and-blue-lit refinery and port to the twinkling, terraced lights of the Baha'i Gardens and everything in between. Beyond that stretched the Mediterranean, dark.
"Great View," I offered, to revive the conversation, "and I've seen a lot." I explained I'd been around the world, cycled 300 miles alone in Tasmania, studied in South Africa.
"Really?" Dov asked, surprised and impressed. We turned to face each other, and he sized me up, probably for the first time. "You're like a small Rambo." I laughed; we turned back to gaze at the bay. Only now he stood behind me, leaning against my back, and from there, everything suddenly looked different. |
