As i looked around the convenience store for the beer section there was a thin, wolfish-like, attractive couple who seemed to be foraging for cigarettes and slurpees with the last few dollars they could muster. They joined together at the cash register to speak softly to each other of recent drug busts and parole officers, while Christmas carols warbled from the ceiling.
My imagination filled the rest of the story in, right or wrong.
Coming out of the store, cheap beer in hand, I saw the woman happily smoking, blowing puffs out the window of their dented Honda. He was looking out through the car window with a look that seemed to say -- "the whole evening lays ahead of us."
Like wolves they left, thin, underfed, and with grinning mouths, seemingly as happy as a footloose pair of wolves could be.
I had the odd urge to join them in some fashion, and realized in many ways it was easier than I might think -- a tank of gas, a dented old car, some cigs, and maybe nowhere to go immediately. |
